FieldStaff Antiques is a partnership between Jane Staff and Jim Field, who specialise in quality antiques and collectables. With a background in aerospace, yet a passion for antiques, Jane and Jim started out as serious collectors trading to fund a hobby, but ended up with a thriving business, established in Rochester for over 15 years.
FieldStaff doesn't set out to be thought of as a typical antique shop. For a start, you'll notice background music playing, from the 1920s 30s and 40s. The atmosphere in the quaint, historic building that houses the shop, could best be described as unstuffy, even laid back, and browsers are positively welcomed. The items on display in the four large showrooms are billed as "a cornucopia of collectables"; and although very much from the days of yesteryear, many could be thought of as quirky, unashamedly retro, or even kooky.
Anyone can visit, but you could easily find yourself rubbing shoulders with London based stylists, or students from the nearby University of the Creative Arts, who love coming here to buy or simply seek inspiration, from amongst the heady and inspiring mix of items.
The ground floor has a mix of costume jewellery, collectable china, silver and small pieces of furniture. The basement is excellent for a rummage amongst china, glass, tins, books, kitchenalia, breweriana, old records and more. The backroom has a nostalgic wartime feel with thousands of old postcards, photos, general ephemera and military items. Those really "in the know" tend to head straight for the first floor, where you'll find vintage, retro and good quality second-hand clothing, accessories and luggage for women and men.
With prices to suit all budgets, it's hardly surprising that some customers happily spend hours looking round, before trying to make the agonising decision about what to buy.
